Position Description: Maul Foster & Alongi, Inc. (MFA) is seeking a full-time Staff Environmental Scientist to join us in either our Portland or Lake Oswego offices. In this position, you will join our project team conducting technical work related to the Portland Harbor Superfund Site allocation process. Familiarity with the allocation process is ideal but not required. The ideal candidate will have experience and interest in conducting document review and research, similar to the research involved with a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment report.

You relish taking on a problem, utilizing your technical knowledge and experience, and leveraging your clear, concise, and persuasive communication skills in service of our clients' legal position.

As a Staff Environmental Scientist, you will

  • Delve into documents to understand the history of commercial and industrial sites as they relate to environmental concerns in the Portland Harbor.
  • Review technical reports, maps, aerial photographs, and similar documents to identify facts and develop technical arguments
  • Identify data gaps and data needs and communicate the rationale for why those data needs are critical to the legal arguments being put forth.
  • Interact regularly with the MFA project team and broader client team, including client and counsel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting document research including preparation of Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Strong foundation of inorganic and organic chemistry, fate, and transport.
  • Ability to develop sound, persuasive, and logical technical arguments supported by facts and data.
  • Ability to communicate and defend your technical opinions combined with an open-mindedness to accept feedback to bolster their credibility.
  • Ability to work both independently with little guidance and within a collaborative group environment.
  • Able to formulate and clearly communicate ideas, verbally and in writing.
  • Dedication to client deadlines and willingness to work to meet deadlines as necessary.
  • Proven organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail.
  • Sound technical capabilities.
  • Valid driver's license/acceptable driving record.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Word processing and spreadsheet software proficiency.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of current and historical industrial practices in the Portland Harbor and how those practices lead to sediment contamination or the redistribution of sediment contamination throughout the Portland Harbor.
  • Familiarity with the allocation process.
  • Working knowledge of fate and transport of inorganic and organic chemicals in upland and aquatic settings, with emphasis on mechanisms for releases of chemicals to sediments in an aquatic environment.
